How to do it
-
Bring young people, especially those who are not used to traveling by bus or who need support in learning how to use local transport.
-
Together, choose a pleasant and easily accessible destination, preferably within walking distance of the bus stop (e.g., a library) or a place where you can relax (e.g., an outdoor gym, a skate park, or a sports field). If you wish, you can include a joint picnic break during the trip.
-
Go through the routines before you leave: how to check the route, follow stops, buy tickets, and behave on the bus.
-
The bus trip is a good opportunity to talk casually – about how the day has been or about experiences and rules for traveling on public transport.
-
On the return trip, you can review the route and talk about how it felt to travel: what was easy, what felt nerve-wracking, and what was learned.
-
Repeat the route later if necessary, so that the young person can gradually try to make the journey more independently.
This method strengthens young people’s sense of participation and ability in everyday mobility. Traveling together and getting to know the local area promotes community and a sense of participation and control.
