When you’re going through a crisis, you may experience a mix of emotions and physical reactions. You might feel anxious, depressed, irritable, or have trouble sleeping. Physical pain can also appear. Your sense of safety and stability may feel shaken, and it can seem like you are losing control over your life.

Many different situations can trigger a crisis. These might include a sudden change, a shocking event, multiple stressful situations happening at once, or a major life transition, such as retirement or becoming a parent. Even predictable events, like the birth of a child, can bring significant changes that trigger a crisis.

Crises are often described as either developmental or traumatic.

Developmental crises are a natural part of life and happen as you move from one stage to another, such as adjusting to a new family situation or entering retirement.

Traumatic crises, on the other hand, are caused by unexpected and intense events, that can be especially hard to cope with. Sudden death of a loved one or a serious illness are examples of potentially traumatic situations.

Everyone responds to crises differently. Some recover quickly, while others may need more time and support. It’s common for difficult feelings from the past to resurface, which can make the current situation feel even harder. At the same time, a crisis can offer an opportunity to rethink your life and discover new strengths. With time and support, healing is possible.

Recovery is different for everyone, and it can help to seek support from family, friends, or professionals. It can also be useful to reflect on how you have handled difficult situations in the past and what has helped you move forward.

If you’re struggling, it’s important to remember that you are not alone. Support is available.
