This online course, designed by MIELI Mental Health Finland, is suitable for everyone from beginners to more experienced coaches. In addition to coaches, the course is recommended for people who are involved in the activities of children’s and young people’s sports clubs, such as club management and guardians.

In this course, you will learn how to promote and support the mental well-being of young athletes. The content is primarily designed for the coaches of children and young people aged 10–15. The methods are also applicable for the activities of other age groups.

The online course is free of charge and does not require signing in. You can browse the course as you wish and study different chapters in any order. It takes just over 30 minutes to go through the content of the course. You can return to view the content at any time. If you want to continue from a specific chapter, write down the title of the chapter/section so you know where you left off.

You can request a certificate after completing the course. Certificates are sent by e-mail about once in two weeks.

Online Course Content

Mental well-being can be supported and improved even with small actions in daily training.

The Mental Well-being for Young Athletes online course provides you with

  • information about how you, as a coach, can promote the mental well-being of children and young people,
  • tools for planning and carrying out training, and
  • clues for the continuous evaluation of the methods that promote mental well-being.

The material of the course provide concrete examples of methods. Even simple acts, such as greeting others and pointing out positive things, can affect mental well-being.

You can download the Characteristics of Quality Training, a basic tool for all coaches, from the course material. The Coach’s Checklist supports the self-evaluation of coaches.

The Mental Well-being for Young Athletes methods are based on the PERMA model devised by Martin Seligman.

For more experienced coaches, head coaches, professional coaches, coach trainers and other people in similar positions we recommend an advanced online course, which takes about 3 hours to complete.

The advanced online course contains the same basic information as the 30-minute course. However, the advanced course has more material and explains how you can take mental well-being support methods into use in daily training in a planned and systematic manner.
